Muscle Name:
Orbicularis Oculi
Connected Bones:
Frontal Bone, Maxilla
Muscle Function:
The orbicularis oculi is a critical muscle responsible for the closing of the eyelids. This muscle allows us to blink, squint, and even wink. It is divided into three parts: the orbital part, which encircles the eye socket; the palpebral part, which resides in the eyelids; and the lacrimal part, which aids in tear drainage.
Daily Life Usage:
The orbicularis oculi muscle plays a vital role in daily activities. Each time we blink, this muscle acts to moisten and protect the eye, helping to clear away small particles and spread tears over the surface of the eyeball. This involuntary action happens thousands of times a day without us even realizing it. Additionally, facial expressions such as smiling or frowning heavily rely on this muscle, contributing to non-verbal communication and emotional expression.
